Dance is in my opinion a way to communicate something in a sort of international way, without the need of using words. It is a communication that carries different messages, depending on the recipient of that message that gives it a particular interpretation.
Â
And if a dance show is a monologue to an audience, a social dance like Salsa is a dialogue between two people, a more intimate affair.
Â
Two people that are moving to the same song (and hopefully rhythm 😅)
, with a leader signalling the next move and the follower receiving it in their very personal way.
It is very interesting to see the interaction between a leader and a follower on the dance floor. I am not a psychologist but I am pretty sure that the way a dancer leads and follows says a lot about the type of communicator of a dancer and their personality.
There’s the gentle and protective leader that ensures their hold is there when the dance partner  finishes  a spin, the empathic one that doesn’t subject the follower to a turn after another 😖, the shy one that never goes for a close crossbody, the bossy one with their a-slightly-too-rough lead, the hesitant one who is half a beat behind, the artistic one who interprets every single instrument, accent, pause, word.
Â
But like in any dialogue (In theory 😅) the follower also has a say  and they and follow the lead in their very own personal way, emphasising a step, adding an arm styling, a break, a shimmy, a hip roll. And so we have the assertive follower, the sassy one, the reserved, the shy but sassy, the fun one , the bossy one and so many more.

And you? What’s your style of communication?
